“The moratorium on the growing of genetically modified (GM) canola crops in SA needs to be lifted,” says SA Nationals President Wilbur Klein. “There has been more than enough debate, and a decision is now needed that provides South Australian farmers with the choice to use GM canola in their cropping rotations.” “Our farmers are innovative and have a proven ability to adapt to change and technology. With the changing climatic conditions it is imperative that SA farmers have as many tools and choices as is possible to maintain the viability of their farming enterprises. The science is there and needs to be accepted and acted upon. The argument and debate about GM canola needs to end,” said Mr Klein. “The growing of GM canola will not be mandatory; farmers will have a choice. It is time for our State Government to support farmers and to focus on the implementation of GM canola as an integral part of the state’s farming systems. In so doing the Government will be signalling to the farming community that we respect and trust them. It will indicate to the farming community that we value their hard work and will support them as an important part of our broader SA community.” Mr Klein said “After all South Australian farmers support many other industries and people in country SA and in the city, and are a vital sector of our state’s economy. We simply cannot hold back on opportunities for our farmers to access new ideas and technologies. Let’s end the GM canola moratorium and allow our farmers get on with feeding the world.” Wilbur Klein, SA Nationals President
