Flinders Electorate
Presently I live and work for a farming enterprise at Cockaleechie. I am married to Monika with four children, the youngest completing year 12 at Cummins Area School in 2010.
My passions are my family and community, my faith as a Christian and my faith in other people, education, farming, music, and the outdoors.
My work life has included a career in education as a teacher and principal in country and remote locations of WA in primary and area schools, share farming at Cummins, and presently I work for a farming enterprise at Cockaleechie. I also do relief teaching at local schools when needed. As a youngster I delivered newspapers, baled and carted straw and hay, laboured on farms, worked in shearing sheds, a brick works, an auction house, in gardens - and in Dad’s garden for the love of it.
My hobbies include playing and writing music as a singer and guitarist, solo and with a band ‘Roy’s Boys’, camp oven cooking, swagging it in the bush, gardening, reading, community involvement, bike riding, swimming, and enjoying the beach.
My present community involvement includes activity as the Chair of the Cockaleechie Hall, Member of the Cummins Enterprise Committee, Chair of St Pauls Lutheran Church Cummins, Captain of Brooker 34 CFS Brigade, Representative of the Tumby Bay Group on the Eyre CFS Volunteers Organisation, Member of the School Chaplain Support Group, and Member of the Cellar Folk Club. In the past I have been involved in tidy towns, school council, ambulance, management of Life Education Centre (Drug Education for children), local sporting clubs, President of the SA Nationals, Clean Up Australia, and youth activities.
My community volunteering includes playing music at community functions spread from Port Lincoln to Denial Bay including community concerts, church services, community carols, local music halls, local chows, and old folk’s homes. I have been a camp oven cook at local events including Stinky Creek Music Festival, Cummins Centenary Trek and youth camps. As a family we have been cooks for youth and family camps, community events and fundraisers. Set up and clean up at community events. Set up and operated public address systems for community events, acted as master of ceremonies at community events, guest speaker at community groups such as Probis, schools, CWA, and men’s gatherings. Judge and gate keeper at the local show. Time keeper at the footy. Bus driver at school.
My knowledge, skills and abilities have been developed as I have worked in a variety of school types and locations, through my involvement in state and regional committees in education, having lived and worked in varied country and isolated communities, having a varied career in education and agriculture, in my responsibilities and joy as a husband and a farther, through my active involvement in community as a volunteer, and working with others. The skills and abilities I have developed include an ability to communicate and work with people from all sections of our community, an ability to actively listen to people, an ability to work hard at an issue until resolution, an ability to trust and respect others, an ability to plan and implement projects with others, an ability to speak in public and debate issues, an ability to lead, an ability to make decisions, and an ability to serve.
How I live my life is based on my personal values that include family and tradition, service and vocation, trust, faith, community, collaboration, and creativity.
I do believe I have the ability to represent the people, the families, and communities in Flinders positively in our state parliament. My first connection and loyalty is with community and I will work with which ever government is in power for the common good of families and communities.
